The Safari

Pedal Safari East Africa is an ecotourism event that promotes bicycle travel in East Africa. What makes Pedal Safari a unique experience is that it combines the thrill of bicycle touring with appreciation of indigenous cultures, and wildlife. The East African region is abundance with geographical phenomena that include magnificent landscapes, the Indian Ocean, lakes, rivers, waterfalls, unique flora and fauna, and cultural diversity.

In addition to many opportunities to interact with local people, take excursions to wildlife parks, and contribute to local communities through goodwill projects, participants get a profound cultural immersion, taking part in community and events, as well as witnessing magnificent landscapes, like those of the Great Rift Valley, the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti Wildlife Reserve.

The safari will be divided into two legs and will commence on July 21 with an pedal safariorientation in Dar-es-salaam, Tanzania. Participants can choose to participate in either one or both of the legs. From the East African coastal town of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, we will snake our way north-westward through rural Tanzania, making nightly stops in townships and villages. Five days cycling will bring us to Moshi, a laid back town nestled in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. Here we will take a break from bicycling and participate in goodwill projects such as helping to refurbish schools or other community projects.

We will then venture into the wilderness to Ngorongoro and Serengeti wildlife reserves to experience and witness East African wild-life first hand.

After this break, we will bus to Naivasha Kenya, where we will camp for two nights, take part in more goodwill projects, and conduct an orientation for the second leg of the safari.

Two days later, we will embark on the second leg, beginning with a bike ride from Naivasha to Nakuru. From Nakuru, we will bus to Tororo, Uganda. From Tororo, we will take a bike ride to Budaka, a small trading center near the town of Mbale, where we will break for a couple of days and get a feel for idyllic rural Uganda. In Budaka and Mbale, we will be treated to tribal drumming and dancing. After this refreshing break, we will head for our final destination, Kampala, with nightly stop in Iganga and Jinja.
